As an indexer, I create access points into the text. I carefully read the text and write an index that includes main entries for all relevant terms and any terms that readers may search for. I break down main entries into subentries and include cross-references as needed. I work with publisher specifications to ensure that the index reflects the author’s voice and serves the readers' needs.
